Apple distributing compensation checks totaling $395 as a part of the settlement for faulty Butterfly Keyboard issues
In a recent development, consumers who have experienced issues with the defective butterfly keyboards on their MacBooks, purchased between 2015 and 2018, may be eligible for payouts. However, it's important to note that all deadlines to participate in the class action suit have passed, meaning those just learning about this are no longer eligible for payouts.
The manufacturer, Apple, introduced the butterfly keyboard on the 2015 MacBook, followed by the MacBook Pro in 2016, and the MacBook Air in 2018. These keyboards were associated with issues such as characters repeating unexpectedly, letters not appearing, and keys feeling sticky or not responding consistently.
Eligible consumers are categorised into three groups based on the kind of repairs they underwent: Group 1 (minimum of two Topcase Replacements), Group 2 (one Topcase Replacement), and Group 3 (Keycap Replacement). Some consumers have already started receiving checks as part of the settlement.
The payouts are only available to consumers from California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, or Washington. The keyboard settlement site details the defective issues with the butterfly keyboards and provides further information on eligibility criteria.
It's worth mentioning that Apple switched to its Magic Keyboard in late 2019, marking the end of the butterfly keyboard era. Despite being one of Apple's innovative designs, the butterfly keyboard was considered one of the company's flops by many, including some tech critics.
However, for those who have been affected by the faulty butterfly keyboards, this settlement offers some relief. Consumers are encouraged to visit the keyboard settlement site to check their eligibility and claim their payouts if applicable.
