Applying for Japan's Digital Nomad Visa: A Guide [In 5 Simple Steps]
Japan, known for its digital-friendly environment, thriving culture, and decent cost of living, is set to launch a digital nomad visa by the end of March 2024. This visa will cater to remote workers, allowing them to stay in Japan for up to six months.
For those interested, the process begins with preparing the necessary documents. If you decide not to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), you can make the visa appointment directly after preparing your documents. However, if you choose to obtain the COE, you should apply online if you are located outside of Japan.
The documents required for the Japan digital nomad visa include a copy of your passport, passport-size photos, proof of income, the document explaining your planned activities in Japan, the international health insurance policy, proof of relationship to dependents (if applicable), the COE (optional), the completed visa application form, passport-size photos for spouses and dependents, the COE for spouses and dependents, and the completed visa application form for spouses and dependents.
To be eligible for the Japan digital nomad visa, applicants must work remotely, meet a minimum income requirement, have international health insurance, and have an address of accommodations. It's important to note that digital nomads with this visa will not be considered residents in Japan.
Citizens from Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and several other countries can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens from Brunei can enter Japan visa-free for up to 14 days, while citizens from Thailand and Indonesia can enter for up to 15 days. For the rest of the world, applying for a tourist visa before entering Japan will be necessary.
While the Japan digital nomad visa is not renewable, you may reapply for the visa six months after you have left the country. It's also worth mentioning that there will be a visa fee of either 3,000 JPY (around $20 USD) for a single-entry visa or 6,000 JPY (around $40 USD) for a multiple-entry visa.
Lastly, applicants may bring their spouse and children with them to Japan. However, digital nomads with the Japan digital nomad visa are not eligible to apply for a residence certificate or lease long-term accommodations.
