Indian Union Cabinet Approves Major Transport and Welfare Initiatives
The Indian Union Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, made significant decisions at a cabinet meeting held on August 17, 2023. The meeting saw the approval of various transport and welfare projects, aiming to boost infrastructure and enhance the livelihoods of citizens.
One of the key decisions was the financing and implementation of Mumbai Metro Line 11. The project, which has already received infrastructure clearance, will be managed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). The Metro Line 11 will serve as an extension of Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasara Vadavli) and will connect Anik Depot-Wadala to the Gateway of India. Around 70 per cent of the corridor will be underground.
The Maharashtra Cabinet also approved the Metro Line 11 project, marking a significant step towards improving Mumbai's public transportation system. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 23,487.51 crore.
In addition to the Metro Line 11, the Cabinet also approved a proposal for constructing the third and fourth suburban railway lines between Pune and Lonavala, with an investment of Rs 5,100 crore. Rs 14,907 crore has been earmarked for the development of 136 km of new suburban rail corridors, including Panvel-Vasai, Kasara-Asangaon, and Badlapur-Karjat.
To further bolster public transportation, the Cabinet approved the procurement of 238 air-conditioned local trains under MUTP-3 and MUTP-3A, with a provision of Rs 4,826 crore.
In a move to support the welfare of its citizens, the Cabinet also sanctioned loans for several metro initiatives, including the Thane Circular Metro, Pune Metro Line-2 and Line-4, and Nagpur Metro Phase-2.
In a series of welfare-focused decisions, the Cabinet approved a Rs 1,000 hike in monthly assistance for beneficiaries under the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana. From October 2025, monthly aid will increase from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 for over 4.5 lakh beneficiaries under the Niradhar Yojana. Similarly, monthly aid will increase from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 for 24,003 beneficiaries under the Shravanbal scheme from October 2025. An additional Rs 570 crore has been allocated to support the increase in monthly assistance for beneficiaries under the Niradhar Yojana and the Shravanbal scheme.
These decisions reflect the Indian Union Cabinet's commitment to improving public transportation and enhancing the welfare of its citizens. The approvals are expected to bring significant improvements to the quality of life for many across the country.
