Army Vehicle Stopped by Kolkata Police for Dangerous Driving Habits
In a tense turn of events in Kolkata, an Indian Army truck driver found themselves in hot water on Tuesday after a close call with the city's Police Commissioner, Manoj Verma. The incident occurred near the Writer's Building in BBD Bagh, as the military vehicle attempted a reckless manoeuvre that nearly resulted in a collision.
According to reports, the Army truck was en route to the passport office and was coming from Fort William, the Eastern Command headquarters. The vehicle attempted to take a wrong turn from the far left of the road at a crossing, intending to enter Old Court House Street. This dangerous move put the Army truck on a collision course with Commissioner Verma's car, who was on his way to Lalbazaar, the Kolkata Police headquarters.
Fortunately, the alertness of the other driver prevented a collision. However, a traffic sergeant intervened and stopped the Army truck for prosecution under section 281 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act. The FIR was lodged at the Hare Street police station.
The Army personnel in the truck claimed that their vehicle slowed down to turn right, and Commissioner Verma's car passed by from the right at the same time. However, the CCTV footage obtained by the Kolkata Police tells a different story. The footage shows the Army truck driving dangerously and violating traffic lanes.
The Army personnel in the truck did not mention any attempts to take a wrong turn during the incident. This near-collision occurred a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre of misusing the Army. It is unclear whether this incident is related to her accusations.
In response to the incident, the Kolkata Police warned against relying on unverified claims and advised the public to rely on official sources for accurate updates. The Army soldiers were also in the news recently for dismantling Mamata Banerjee's party's agitation venue in the city for its existence beyond permission.
It is important to note that the Army truck driver had been charged with reckless driving the previous day in Kolkata. The Army has not issued a statement regarding this incident as of yet. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic rules and the potential consequences of reckless driving.
