Arrested New York Gunman Previously Taken into Custody in a Las Vegas Casino Two Years Prior
In a shocking turn of events, Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, carried out a deadly shooting rampage at 345 Park Ave. in Manhattan on July 28, 2025. The incident occurred during the late afternoon rush hour, claiming the lives of four innocent victims and critically injuring a fifth.
Tamura, armed with a high-powered M4 rifle and wearing body armour, entered the 44-story building that houses offices like Blackstone and the NFL. He opened fire in the lobby, killing an off-duty NYPD police officer working security, Didarul Islam, as well as three other victims. Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone real estate executive, Julia Hyman of Rudin Management, and security officer Aland Etienne were among the victims.
After shooting a victim on the 33rd floor, Tamura reportedly intended to reach the NFL offices on lower floors. However, he ended up taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Authorities have stated that it is unknown why Tamura targeted this particular location or whether he had any connection to the companies housed there, including Rudin Management, whose office is on the 33rd floor where the final shooting occurred. Police are continuing to investigate his motives.
In the days leading up to the shooting, Tamura was on a cross-country journey by car, traveling through several states including Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa before reaching New Jersey and finally New York City on the day of the shooting.
Prior to the incident, Tamura had a brush with the law in 2024 when he was cited for driving without a valid license and registration. He was not taken into custody at that time.
In an unrelated incident, Tamura was arrested at the Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas on September 27, 2023. The arrest occurred after Tamura refused to leave the casino's cashier area and refused to present identification to claim a $5,000 prize. He was later released and the charges were dismissed.
Investigators discovered a rifle case containing rounds, ammunition magazines, and a loaded revolver inside the vehicle Tamura exited in Manhattan. A note found in his pocket expressed frustration with the NFL and claimed he was suffering from CTE, a degenerative brain disease that can affect athletes. However, it's important to note that CTE can only be definitively diagnosed through a postmortem examination of the brain.
The NYPD, along with Las Vegas police, are assisting each other in their investigations into Tamura's actions. The situation escalated when Tamura grabbed a security officer, leading to his arrest. The authorities have confirmed that Tamura's brain will be examined for CTE.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time. The investigation into this tragic incident continues.
