Arrests Made in Bangkok: Over 200 Individuals Detained in Illegal Gambling Operation
In a significant move against illegal gambling activities, a major gambling den in Bangkok was raided on Wednesday night. The operation, led by Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who is also the acting prime minister, resulted in the arrest of over 200 gamblers.
The den, part of a network that had been raided multiple times but continued to operate illegally, was generating 3 to 4 million baht in a few hours daily. According to Mr Phumtham, the illegal gambling hub was causing insecurity and addiction among family members, including teenagers, in the area.
The authorities had been monitoring the site for about a month before making the arrest. The venue, located in Bangkok, operated daily from 10am to 6am the next day, with only a four-hour break. It boasted five gambling rooms, including VIP rooms and a large central hall.
Seventeen bank passbooks were seized, containing records of cash flow of over 500 million baht per month. Photos of the seized evidence were displayed during the announcement of the raid results. However, Mr Phumtham did not provide details about the fate of the arrested gamblers or the owners of the gambling den.
The operation was aimed at a specific illegal gambling hub, without specifying the exact location within Bangkok. The Interior Minister emphasised that such actions would continue to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. The raid followed complaints from residents in the area about the illegal gambling hub.
