Art Gallery Schulberg within Kunsthaus Wiesbaden resumes studio access
Artists Move Into Wiesbaden's Renovated Atelierhaus
After a meticulous renovation process, the Atelierhaus, housed in a historic building formerly known as Werk and Kunstschule Wiesbaden, has opened its doors to fourteen international and regional artists.
The building, now under monument protection, was converted into an Atelierhaus in the heart of Wiesbaden back in 1988. Since early August, artists such as Juan David Bermúdez, Mareike Buchmann, Angela Cremer, Giacomo Frey, Lukas Gartiser, Anne-Louise Hoffmann, Danbi Jeung, Johanna Kiefer, Midia Omriko, Cornelia Rößler, Christiane Steitz, Daniel Stier, Christine Straszewski, and Lola Göller have taken up residence in their ateliers.
The Werk and Kunstschule moved into its current premises in 1949, which was originally designed as an elementary school in 1863. Over the years, it has evolved into a renowned institution, with Vincent Weber leading it from 1954 to 1965.
The renovation, commissioned by the Cultural Office in 2017 and carried out by the architectural office Lehners & Barbian, included the installation of an elevator for barrier-free accessibility and the renovation of the exhibition room "Aula." The redesigned Aula will open on September 10, 2025, with the exhibition "Faceless. Women in Prostitution."
The Kunsthaus, which houses the Atelierhaus, offers six to eight exhibitions annually. The artists work in various fields, including sculpture, painting, photography, sound, and performance art.
The Kunsthalle, which opened in 2011, and the Aula are the locations for these presentations. The Artothek, located at the Kunsthaus, offers art on loan for homes and houses the municipal art collection with 4,000 art treasures for borrowing.
All interested parties are invited to explore the Kunsthaus area, including the newly opened Atelierhaus, from 3 pm to 8 pm. On September 6, 2023, the Kunsthaus will celebrate its history and future with open ateliers, workshops, performances, and guided tours.
It's worth noting that the grant approved from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety was used for the energy optimization of the building. This commitment to sustainability is evident in the Atelierhaus's design, ensuring a comfortable and eco-friendly workspace for the resident artists.
The artists who will work in the new atelier house opening in September 2025 have not yet been specifically named. However, the atelier house for the Schöne Felder collective will offer 69 rentable spaces covering various art forms, and both members and external applicants can apply for them.
The Atelierhaus houses eleven ateliers spread over four floors, providing ample space for creativity and collaboration. The Kunsthaus continues to be a vibrant hub for contemporary art and socially relevant discourses, with innovative and inclusive event and mediation formats presented throughout the year.
