Art studio at Kunsthaus Wiesbaden's Schulberg branch reopens for public access again
Wiesbaden's Kunsthaus Reopens After Eight Years of Renovation
After eight years of renovation, the Atelierhaus within the historic Altbau – the former Werk and Kunstschule Wiesbaden – has officially reopened. The Kunsthaus, now an oasis of art and a hub for discursive exchange about contemporary art and society-relevant discourses, invites dialogue and welcomes fourteen regional and international artists.
Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende expressed his pleasure at the reopening, stating that the Kunsthaus is once again an experienceable place of art production. The city council approved the general renovation of the municipal Kunsthaus with a resolution on November 24, 2015. The architectural office Lehners & Barbian was commissioned to implement the renovation in 2017.
The Atelierhaus contains eleven ateliers spread over four floors, providing artists with the necessary space to create and develop their work. The artists in residence include Juan David Bermúdez, Mareike Buchmann, Angela Cremer, Giacomo Frey, Lukas Gartiser, Anne-Louise Hoffmann, Danbi Jeung, Johanna Kiefer, Midia Omriko, Cornelia Rößler, Christiane Steitz, Daniel Stier, Christine Straszewski, and Lola Göller.
The Kunsthaus hosts six to eight exhibitions annually and presents innovative and inclusive event and mediation formats. The redesigned Aula for exhibitions and events, as well as an art room for mediation offers, are again available. The redesigned Aula will open on September 10, 2025, with the exhibition "Faceless. Women in Prostitution." This thought-provoking exhibition will run until October 26, 2025.
Barrier-free accessibility has been installed throughout the Kunsthaus, including an elevator, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the art on display. The Kunsthaus also houses the Artothek, which offers art on loan for home and houses the municipal art collection with 4,000 art treasures for borrowing.
Vincent Weber led the Werk and Kunstschule from 1954 to 1965, transforming it into a renowned training institution similar to the Bauhaus. The school moved into the premises in 1949, which was originally designed as an elementary school in 1863.
The Kunsthaus will celebrate its history and future on September 6, 2023, with various events including open ateliers, workshops, artist talks, and dance. Citizens can contact the responsible department or office with any questions regarding the Kunsthaus.
Dr. Hendrik Schmehl, the Culture Commissioner, stated that the Kunsthaus has become an important prerequisite for the promotion of artists, creating spaces for art. The reopening of the Kunsthaus marks a significant milestone in Wiesbaden's cultural landscape and promises to provide a platform for artists and art enthusiasts alike.
