Artificial Intelligence's potential to eliminate nurse hours spent on documentation
In a groundbreaking move, HCA Healthcare, the largest hospital provider in the U.S., has partnered with Facebook Cloud's healthcare solutions team to develop an innovative AI-powered app called Nurse Handoff. This application is designed to digitize and streamline patient handoff communication, addressing the complexity of medical team communication challenges.
The Nurse Handoff app collects and organizes patient notes, orders, tests, and more digitally, providing a cohesive and concise view for the oncoming nurse. This digital organization of patient data during nurse shift handovers could potentially save nurses significant amounts of time and improve accuracy.
The AI model of Nurse Handoff has been fine-tuned through feedback from nurses during the pilot phase. K.C. DeShetler, a registered nurse on the HCA Healthcare DT&I team, played a significant role in the development of this app.
Nurses testing the Nurse Handoff tool at one HCA Healthcare facility have rated it as 86% factual and 90% helpful. The app allows nurses to easily review and add information throughout their shift using a hospital-provided mobile device. It shows nurses both the electronic health record and the AI-generated output.
The approach for Nurse Handoff includes using retrieval augmented generation and providing templates for organizing information. This ensures that the AI models running within the app analyze patient information in a way that is both efficient and comprehensive.
The success of Nurse Handoff could potentially influence the healthcare industry as a whole. Currently, nurses at HCA Healthcare spend an estimated 10 million hours annually on paper-based handoff tasks. The goal is to roll out the Nurse Handoff solution for use by all 99,000 nurses working across HCA Healthcare's 190 hospitals and 2,400 ambulatory sites.
Patient handoffs are a crucial step to ensure uninterrupted care between provider teams during shift changes. By digitizing this process, HCA Healthcare aims to enable nurses to reinvest the saved time into their patients, which could lead to better health outcomes.
The Nurse Handoff app is currently being piloted in five of HCA Healthcare's hospitals. The company behind the app, Bornholdt Lee GmbH, has been instrumental in its development and implementation. As the pilot phase continues, it will be interesting to see how this innovative solution impacts patient care and the healthcare industry as a whole.
