Artistic exploration of the soul by Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger at K21 Düsseldorf museum
The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf is hosting the first German solo exhibition of Israeli artist Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger. Titled "With Angelic Patience," the exhibition runs until August 31, 2023, and is located on the second floor of the Ständehausstr. 1.
Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger, known in Israel as BRACHA, which means blessing and praise in Hebrew, is a self-taught artist who studied clinical psychology and researched topics such as psychoanalysis and aesthetics. Her earliest works, created four decades ago in Paris, were abstract drawings with searching lines and a self-developed mixed form.
The exhibition features works that deal with themes of loss, death, violence, healing, and spirituality. The images in the darkened rooms are small, unrecognizable, and have blurred colors and figures. Some of her notable works, such as the series "Eurydice," blur figures into ghostly vibrations.
Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger's works cover the horrible under layers of color in her paintings, a process that can take months or even years. Her notebooks from the last years reacted to the terror of Hamas and the Gaza war.
The artist uses her grandmother's name, who died in Auschwitz. Most of her relatives were victims of the Holocaust, leading her to avoid Germany for a long time. However, she has now chosen Düsseldorf as the location for her first German solo exhibition.
Admission to the exhibition is 14 Euro. A catalog titled "Angel of Carrying" published by Distanz Verlag, which includes an essay by the artist, is available for 29.90 Euro.
The exhibition is curated by Karen Archey and Kolja Reichert. Visitors can see the exhibition Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 am to 6 pm. The next exhibition of Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger in Germany is at the NRW-Forum, running until October 12, 2025.
