Assassination of Previous Parliamentary Leader in Lviv, Ukraine
Breaking News: Former Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy Assassinated in Lviv
Andriy Parubiy, a prominent figure in Ukraine's political landscape and a key leader of the Maidan protests in 2013-14, was tragically killed in the western city of Lviv on Saturday.
According to reports from Ukraine's Interior Ministry, law enforcement officers are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Parubiy's death. The police, state security service, and prosecutors are pursuing several leads, including potential involvement by Russia.
Parubiy, who served as the speaker of Ukraine's parliament until his death, was a staunch defender of Ukraine's independence and was widely believed to be a target for the Kremlin due to his opposition to the Russian "fifth column."
He had left his home and was heading to a nearby gym that he attended regularly when the gunman approached him. A video broadcast on state TV shows the gunman, disguised as a food delivery worker, wearing a helmet that concealed his face, and carrying a yellow insulated bag.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called Parubiy's death a "horrendous murder."
Parubiy's leadership was instrumental in bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union through legislative reforms. His firm guidance was helpful in getting through parliament anti-graft reforms that weren't always easy. He was elected to parliament in 2014 and served as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council the same year. He became the speaker of the parliament in 2016 and was re-elected to the legislature in 2019.
Parubiy was one of the leaders of the street protests that began in late 2013, leading to the ouster of the Russian-backed former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. He was speaker when lawmakers pushed through various reforms aimed at bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union.
The military conflict in eastern Ukraine was triggered by the annexation of Crimea by Russia weeks later. The conflict expanded into Moscow's full-scale invasion in 2022.
As of now, the police understand that the crime was very thoroughly planned, according to Oleksandr Shlyakhovskyi, the police chief in Lviv region. Over 100 people were estimated to have been killed by pro-Russian government forces during the demonstrations that led to Yanukovych's ouster.
Our thoughts are with Parubiy's family and friends during this difficult time. We will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
