Assessment of Potential Flooding Risks in the Bavarian Region for Bayern

The THW Bavarian State Association is still deploying around 100 personnel as they prepare for EURO24 in Munich, while simultaneously aiding in the aftermath of the devastating flooding in Bavaria.

The THW, Germany's federal voluntary aid organization, has been instrumental in the relief efforts, with over 3,000 helpers involved in the aftermath of the flooding "Orinoco." Their expertise and diverse experiences make them a sought-after supporter for fire services, police, aid organizations, and others.

In the acute phase of the flooding, THW forces secured dams and property with tens of thousands of sandbags. Rotary piston pumps, capable of transporting over 50 million liters of water, were used to pump out millions of liters of water. So-called clearing groups used excavators, wheel loaders, and telescopic handlers to clear streets and paths of mud, debris, and rubble.

Unmanned aerial vehicles with drones have been used to quickly gain an overview of the large-scale flooding. Mobile Flood Level Teams have set up an automatic and permanent water level monitoring system, while the special unit VOST provided a digital situation map for the water management authorities. Separation facilities are operated to separate oil and water, creating usable water and reducing special waste quantities by around 90%.

The flood affected several government districts, reaching the highest alert level 4 in several counties. Over 7,000 meals were prepared daily by various THW logistics units for their own forces and other aid organizations and deployment forces.

The THW is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government, including technical and logistical assistance within the framework of the European Union's civil protection mechanism and on behalf of UN organizations.

The specific identities or detailed information about the 100 THW personnel currently still on duty during the preparations for EURO24 in Munich is not disclosed in the available sources. However, THW often maintains active deployments in different regions, such as approximately 50 helpers in Berlin-Treptow-Köpenick addressing a power outage, and other smaller units involved in emergency exercises or environmental assistance.
