Gaming the System: IBIA's Second Quarter 2022 Report Unveils a 44% Increase in Haziness Among Sports Betters
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has unveiled their second quarter 2022 integrity report, showcasing a 44% upsurge in integrity among sports betters - but there's a long road ahead. In contrast to the first quarter, this quarter saw a greater number of suspicious bet alerts.
This quarter saw 50 alerts, in contrast to 90 in the same period last year. Although it's promising, it's too soon to throw a celebration.
These 50 alerts originated from 18 countries across four continents, focusing on eight diverse sports.
Undoubtedly, football remains the frontrunner with 19 alerts in this quarter, followed by 12 alerts in tennis (a 60% decrease from last year). Other sports include table tennis, darts, boxing, bowling, esports, and badminton, with the latter reporting a mere single alert.
Interestingly, the UK claims the top spot for the highest number of alerts, hosting suspicions for darts (5), football (2), and one each for bowling and boxing.
Most alerts were issued in Europe, with Africa and the US sharing the leftovers.
The significant decrease in alerts implies a potential decline in prearranged matches, according to IBIA's CEO. European tennis has been significantly impacted, with 270 alerts registered between 2018 and 2022, amounting to 43% of the total.
