Assessment: While there might be a need for revisions in the script of 'The Paper', the well-developed characters keep the production captivating.
The highly anticipated sitcom 'The Paper' is set to premiere on Peacock beginning September 4, promising a unique blend of humour and journalism. The show, created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, is not another version of 'The Office', but a new sitcom in its own right.
'The Paper' revolves around a daily newspaper, and its best laughs come from a group of high school journalists learning from their professional counterparts. The inexperienced reporters struggle with interviewing and writing, providing ample opportunities for comedic moments.
Domhnall Gleeson, known for his sincere and versatile performances, plays the character Ned Sampson, the new editor in the newspaper. Gleeson's portrayal is noteworthy, as he doesn't shy away from pitching in and reporting when needed. Ned Sampson, in an attempt to make his wishes happen, reverts to his past, adding an interesting layer to the character.
In an effort to trim the budget, the managing editor of the Toledo Truth Teller, a woefully understaffed paper that's part of a paper-related conglomerate, cuts the wire service. This decision prompts Ned Sampson to ask for volunteers from various departments of the conglomerate to help with the newspaper.
The Toledo Truth Teller isn't the only paper facing challenges. The show portrays the launch of a newspaper, not the struggles of one trying to stay afloat. If creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman involve Alex Edelman, who plays one of the 'new' reporters in 'The Paper', more, they could have another Mindy Kaling or B.J. Novak on their hands. Edelman's character is intriguing and could potentially have a significant role in the show.
One of Alex Edelman's episodes, in particular, is a real gem. He wrote a script that adds depth to the show and showcases his writing talent. The show also features a hunt for material in Toledo, with Ned Sampson putting the staff on the chase.
In addition to the first 10 episodes, all available to binge, 'The Paper' is inspired by 'The Office'. The creators of 'The Paper' are the original creators of the British version of 'The Office', Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, serving as executive producers.
So, if you're looking for a fresh, comedic take on journalism, tune into 'The Paper' on Peacock starting September 4."
