Aston Martin braces for an unexpected turn of events.
In the first practice session for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, it was McLaren that stole the show. Lando Norris, driving for the team, set the fastest lap with a time of 1.10.278 minutes, putting him at the top of the leaderboard.
Norris' teammate, Oscar Piastri, also had a strong performance, finishing second, just three tenths behind his teammate. This strong showing from McLaren has put them in a favorable position heading into the weekend.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for the McLaren drivers. Yuki Tsunoda, who was driving for the team in the first practice session, experienced low grip on the track. Norris himself had a close call, spinning before turn three but managing to avoid any significant damage.
Elsewhere on the track, there were a few incidents that disrupted the flow of the session. Kimi Antonelli spun at turn eight and got stuck in the gravel trap, requiring recovery and causing a brief red-flag. Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, also had a moment, missing his braking point in Turn 1 and sliding through the gravel trap after the session ended.
Lewis Hamilton, who is known for his mastery of the track, had a spin of his own, 360 degrees before turn three, forcing him to change his tires earlier than planned. Despite these setbacks, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggled with the conditions in Zandvoort and finished 14th and 15th respectively in the first practice session.
Aston Martin had a strong showing in the first practice session, with Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finishing third and fourth. George Russell finished seventh in the first Mercedes, while Alex Albon in Williams made a good impression, finishing fifth. Carlos Sainz finished ahead of Bortoleto in the same session, taking eighth place.
As the weekend progresses, the weather is forecast to be stormy and unpredictable, with rain predicted for the second practice session. With the unpredictability of the weather and the competitive field, it's anyone's race to win at Zandvoort.
