At Munich's Oktoberfest, beer drinkers will find beer priced lower than water.
The much-anticipated Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, returns this year from September 20 to October 5, but with a significant twist - the prices of food and drinks have seen a significant increase compared to 2019.
One of the most noticeable changes is in the cost of food. For instance, a half chicken at the Paulaner tent now costs 24.50 euros, a steep rise from its 2019 price of 12.40 euros. The record price steak at the festival is offered by the Hofbräu-Festzelt tent, with the basic version costing 179 euros. Remarkably, this price sets a new record for the beer festival.
The "deluxe" version of the steak at the Braürosl tent, which includes black truffle and bernese sauce, is even more expensive, priced at 229 euros. This cost is higher than the most expensive dish at the festival in 2020, which was a basic version of the steak at the Braürosl tent, priced at 14.50-15.80 euros for a liter of beer.
Interestingly, kids' portions like small schnitzels at Oktoberfest, which were previously priced between 16-20 euros, are now more affordable compared to the cost of the steak at the Braürosl tent.
The prices for beer at Oktoberfest have increased nearly 40% over the past six years. However, they are still less expensive than the most expensive dish at the festival this year. The cost of a one-liter mug of beer at the festival ranges from 14.50 to 15.80 euros.
In a surprising turn, at the Oktoberfest in Munich, a liter of water will cost more than a beer. Some places at the festival will charge over 15 euros for a liter of water, making the cost of a beer seem relatively reasonable.
Despite the price hikes, Oktoberfest remains a popular event, drawing millions of visitors each year. It's advisable for attendees to budget accordingly to fully enjoy the festivities.
