Ateneo, beset by injuries, maintains its resilience with pride, thanks to Lyann de Guzman's leadership
Lyann de Guzman, the captain of the Ateneo de Manila University's women's volleyball team, led the team through a challenging season, despite a series of unexpected injuries. In the final game of the season, Ateneo secured a hard-fought four-set win over UE on April 26, finishing the tournament with a record of 5-9, placing seventh.
De Guzman, who is considering turning professional and joining the Premier Volleyball League, expressed disappointment with the team's performance this season. However, she also praised the readiness and performance of the rookies on the team, with Jihan Chuatico and Alexia Montoro contributing 16 points and 11 points respectively in the final game.
The season began on a difficult note for Ateneo, as key players Bea de Leon and Deanna Wong were injured before the tournament start. De Leon suffered an ankle injury, while Wong had a foot injury. The team's woes continued as Geezel Tsunashima broke her left leg during Ateneo's season-opening loss to Adamson. Later in the first round, Sobe Buena suffered a season-ending right knee injury.
Despite these setbacks, De Guzman and the team remained resilient. She admitted she had expected an improved showing from Ateneo this season, given her captainship. However, she praised her team for staying the course, citing their determination as a testament to their spirit.
One of the highlights of De Guzman's final UAAP game was a triple-double of 13 points, 18 excellent digs, and 17 excellent receptions. This impressive performance, along with the contributions of the rookies, provided a glimmer of hope for the future of Ateneo's women's volleyball team.
As the season comes to a close, De Guzman reflects on her learning experience at Ateneo with satisfaction. She is grateful for the opportunity to lead the team through challenging times and looks forward to what the future holds, whether it be in the Premier Volleyball League or beyond.
