Authorities Contemplate Relocating Asylum Seekers into Military Barracks Following Home Office Reorganization
The UK Government has undergone a significant reshuffle, with Yvette Cooper stepping into the role of Foreign Secretary and Shabana Mahmood taking over as Home Secretary.
In the aftermath of these changes, Darren Jones, who is now the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, dismissed suggestions that the reshuffle could delay the Prime Minister's self-described "phase two" of Government.
The former Justice Minister, Shabana Mahmood, has taken charge of the Home Office, with responsibility for borders and asylum policy. According to Government sources, "nothing is off the table" in her new role. Mike Tapp, from Labour's 2022 intake, and Alex Norris are part of her new-look team at the Home Office. Notable departures from the Home Office include Dame Angela Eagle and Dame Diana Johnson, who have been moved to other departments.
In her new capacity as Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood is set to announce plans to move asylum seekers from hotels into military barracks. This move comes amidst reports of dozens of asylum hotels closing due to becoming the focal point of several demonstrations in recent months.
Meanwhile, Ministers are close to agreeing a returns deal with Germany, having already secured one with France. The Government is also reportedly considering the use of Ministry of Defence sites to house people, following a wave of protests outside migrant accommodation. There have been reports of Home Office adverts shown to migrants in France in an attempt to dissuade them from crossing the Channel.
The influx of migrants continues, with an estimated 1,000 people arriving in the UK by small boat over the course of a single day, as per a report on Saturday. However, Darren Jones, in his new role, has ruled out the prospect of an early election.
Despite the reshuffle, Darren Jones insists that Sir Keir now has the "strongest team" in place. He denies that the Government is in crisis and is committed to moving forward with the Prime Minister's agenda.
