The Bremen Police have issued a warning to the public about a scam involving a claim of a son's traffic accident and detention, with a demand for money for release. In a recent incident, an 85-year-old woman from Burglesum was targeted by this fraud.
The woman received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller informed her that her son had caused a severe traffic accident and was detained. The caller requested a large sum of money to secure her son's release.
Fortunately, the woman's neighbor recognised the scam and contacted the police. Bremen Police officers observed a 32-year-old man near the woman's residence and temporarily detained him.
During the search, the man was found with several mobile phones and a switchblade. A subsequent search of his car revealed cash, more mobile phones, and the same switchblade. The man has not been publicly named by the Bremen Police.
The Bremen Police warn against falling victim to this scam. They advise that if uncertain about a call, dial 110, the emergency number in Germany. Never hand over money or valuables to strangers. If the situation seems suspicious, hang up immediately.
In such cases, release from detention after an accident is never dependent on a money payment. The police emphasise the importance of not letting oneself be pressured or rushed into decisions over the phone. Consult a trusted person or call family members using a known number.
