Authorities in Hamburg-St. Pauli are actively probing a 22-year-old individual suspected of inflicting a fatal assault. They are urgently seeking any potential witnesses to come forward with information.

On the evening of August 23, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at Harald-Stender-Platz in Hamburg-St. Pauli. The incident took place shortly after the Bundesliga match between FC St. Pauli and Borussia Dortmund.

According to the police department, a 39-year-old individual, who was reportedly intoxicated, approached a group of people in a harassing manner. A 22-year-old suspect, who was later identified, allegedly pushed the 39-year-old, causing him to fall and hit his head. The 39-year-old was transported to a hospital under the supervision of a doctor but tragically died the following afternoon.

The suspect was provisionally arrested at an address in the Eimsbüttel district. However, the suspect was later released after police measures were completed, as there were no grounds for detention.

Bystanders provided first aid and alerted emergency services. Several people were still on the plaza after the match, and witnesses are being sought for the incident. Witnesses are asked to contact the police hotline at 040 4286-56789 or a local police station.

The investigation into the incident was initially handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (LKA 26). However, due to the severity of the crime, the investigation is now being conducted by the Homicide Commission (LKA 41) in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The police department encourages anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Sören Zimbal from the Police Department Press and Public Relations Office can be reached at +49 40 4286-56214, email: [email protected], or on the police department's website, www.polizei.hamburg.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police department urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
