Authority Figure Physically Assaults Individual - Irish Embassy Voices Disapproval
In a shocking turn of events, a violent altercation between Berlin police and pro-Palestinian protesters has become an international issue. On Thursday evening, a police officer was caught on camera striking an Irish person twice in the face with his fist near the Hackescher Market in Berlin-Mitte.
The Irish Foreign Ministry was quick to respond, with Irish Ambassador Maeve Collins and other high-ranking officials contacting the German authorities to express concern. The Irish Foreign Ministry also stated that they would offer consular support if needed.
According to reports, around 100 people were moving back and forth between Rosenthaler Platz and Hackescher Market during the unauthorized gathering, which was dispersed by the police. The Berlin fire department treated the person who was struck by a police officer, and the Irish broadcaster RTE reported that the victim's arm was broken and they would need surgery.
The Berlin police are aware of the video footage of the incident and have identified the officer involved. However, no criminal proceedings have been initiated against the officer as the behaviour is being examined for proportionality. The police provisionally detained 94 people and initiated 96 criminal proceedings in connection with the incident.
The criminal proceedings include charges for the suspected use of unconstitutional and terrorist organization symbols, physical assault on and resistance against law enforcement officers, insults, bodily harm, and suspected illegal residence. Some people in the gathering were reported to have behaved verbally aggressively towards the officers.
The rally leadership could not be identified, leading to the dispersal of the gathering. The Irish protest group "Irish Bloc Berlin" has not released any official statement regarding the incident.
The Berlin police have stated that they are currently investigating the incident, and the Irish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that they have been informed of the specific incident. This unfortunate event has raised questions about the use of force by the police during protests and the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
