Authority Infringing on Rights, Tinubu Administration Attempting to Muzzle Sowore
In a recent turn of events, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of employing tactics similar to those used by former President Muhammadu Buhari to muzzle him.
The controversy stems from a tweet by Sowore, which the Department of State Services (DSS) claims could incite unrest, due to the use of an unprintable word against President Tinubu. However, there is no earlier mention of this specific tweet in the search results.
Sowore, on the other hand, claims that the government is recycling the strategy used in 2019 to detain him during the Revolution Now protests. This time, he has been accused of terrorism financing by the Buhari regime, leading to a 45-day detention order.
In a more recent development, the DSS has petitioned social media platform X, demanding Sowore's account be deactivated within 24 hours. The DSS has urged social media platform X to act swiftly regarding Sowore's account, but the search results do not contain information about who requested the deactivation of Sowore's Twitter account on X within 24 hours.
Sowore's GTBank account remains frozen, and he is currently in court against GTB and the DSS over the illegal freezing of his account. He describes a recent court order directing the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to access his bank account details as unlawful.
Previously, Sowore has denied allegations of money laundering and cybercrime, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated. He also denies forging a police wireless message. Sowore states that the government's strategy is to blackball him with unsubstantiated allegations.
It is worth noting that this is the first mention of social media platform X in the article. There is no earlier mention of any action by the Society for Enforced Rights and Accountability (SERAP) to stop the DSS's threat to ban social media platform X over Sowore's post.
In a court case earlier this year, Sowore claimed he was accused of cyberbullying the president, but no evidence was presented in court. He continues to maintain his innocence and fight against these allegations.
The DSS's claims against Sowore are currently under scrutiny, with many questioning the legitimacy of the allegations and the motives behind them. The case continues to be a topic of discussion among human rights activists and the general public.
