Auto manufacturer GM integrates Nvidia's artificial intelligence technology for self-driving cars and automated factories.
In a significant move, General Motors (GM) and Nvidia have announced an expanded partnership that aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in vehicle development, manufacturing, and self-driving cars.
The collaboration will see Nvidia's powerful DRIVE AGX chips powering electrical architectures that run unified software for controlling almost all aspects of the vehicle. This software platform, developed by GM, is designed to support various vehicle types, from compact crossovers to full-size trucks and SUVs.
GM has already been using Nvidia's chips for training various AI models, and this partnership will further extend to the development and manufacturing processes. The use of AI is expected to boost efficiency in manufacturing, particularly in robotics for precision welding and material handling.
One of the key areas of focus for this partnership is the advancement of self-driving cars. Cruise, GM's shuttered self-driving technology company, also relied on Nvidia chips, and this partnership will continue to support Cruise's efforts. Other companies partnering with Nvidia for automated driving systems include BYD, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, and Volvo.
In addition to the use of Nvidia's DRIVE AGX chips, the new aspects of the partnership will include using Nvidia's Omniverse simulation program. This program will enable virtual testing and production simulations, helping to streamline the development process and simplify safety certification.
Moreover, the Omniverse simulation program will be used to create digital versions of existing and planned assembly lines. This will allow for more efficient and effective testing and optimisation of manufacturing processes.
The use of AI in manufacturing is also reshaping the automotive industry's revenue streams. Many advanced electronic features in vehicles can now be offered as subscriptions, like GM does with Super Cruise. This approach creates new revenue streams for automakers, allowing them to monetise their technological advancements.
The expanded partnership between General Motors and Nvidia is set to redefine the future of the automotive industry, with AI playing a pivotal role in vehicle development, manufacturing, and self-driving technologies.
