Automakers Hyundai and General Motors confirm cooperation on creating a pickup truck model.

Hyundai and General Motors have joined forces to develop a new mid-size pick-up truck, set to make its debut in 2028. This collaboration aims to produce 800,000 utes a year, with the intention of competing with popular options like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

The new Hyundai model, planned for the Central European market, will be a midsize pickup truck specifically designed to target that segment. According to Hyundai Australia CEO Don Romano, everything is on the table for the collaboration, including the possibility of reusing the Kia Tasman platform.

The resulting pick-up could help Hyundai stand apart from sibling brand Kia's Tasman, as the new vehicle will offer both petrol and hybrid options. Intriguingly, the pick-up may potentially be the Hyundai ute rumored for local markets.

Meanwhile, BYD's Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute has already made an immediate impact in New Zealand and Australia. With BYD having a significant presence in South America and recently starting vehicle production in Brazil, it's worth noting that the Hyundai/GM partnership is also developing a ute for Central and South America.

The mid-size pick-up could revive the Colorado name, which was previously used by GM's former brand Holden. Furthermore, more Chinese utes from Chery, Geely, LDV, and MG are expected to be introduced in Australia and New Zealand, adding to the competitive landscape.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these developments unfold. Stay tuned for more updates on the new Hyundai mid-size pick-up truck.
