Autumn Expenses in Switzerland: A Rising Cost Overview

In a surprising turn of events, Switzerland, known for its high living costs, is experiencing a price decline across various everyday goods and services. The trend began in July 2023 and has continued into 2025.

According to recent statistics, the average cost of everyday goods decreased by 0.2% compared to the previous year. This decline is most pronounced for low-income households, who have seen a reduction of 0.4%.

The price of imported goods, a significant portion of Switzerland's consumer market, has been significantly reduced due to the Swiss National Bank's interest rate policy and foreign exchange sales. This has led to a 6.4% decrease in air transport costs, making round-trip flights from Zurich to New York, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco more affordable. Flights to Los Angeles currently cost 465 francs, while a trip to San Francisco is priced at 401 francs.

Notably, the price of certain goods has increased. Since July 2023, the price of chocolate has jumped by 17.7%, car insurance by 11%, and coffee by 8%. However, other categories such as electrical appliances for personal care, toys and hobby items, travel goods and accessories, and small household appliances have seen a decrease in price by 7%, 5.8%, 5.6%, and 9.6% respectively.

Swiss National Bank's efforts have also led to a nearly 10% drop in heating energy prices (gas, oil, wood, and district heating). Inflation in the eurozone is estimated to be 2 percent, while Switzerland has experienced below 1 percent inflation for 11 consecutive months, and below 0.5 percent for 7 months.

Some media attribute the drop in demand for flights to the "Trump effect" - signs of protest against the US president and his treatment of Switzerland. However, SWISS airline, the national carrier, has not provided an official explanation for the sharp drop in demand for its flights.

Interestingly, rent prices in Switzerland have risen notably, increasing by 2.6 percent in July 2025. This rise in rent prices, coupled with the cost of the Swiss F-35A fighter jets, which increased by about 7.5 million USD per unit compared to previous estimates, has driven general consumer price increases despite slight decreases in everyday goods prices.

Despite these fluctuations, Switzerland continues to offer reduced prices on various goods and services, making it an attractive destination for tourists and consumers alike.
