Autumn Shade Vegetation: Selection for the Season

As the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to change, it's time to spruce up your garden with some new additions. In this article, we've gathered recommendations from the Gardeners' World team and other industry experts to help you create a stunning September garden.

First, let's talk about plants that will thrive in both pots and borders. Oliver Parsons, horticultural sub-editor, recommends the shrub-like Japanese maple, Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream'. This plant delivers lime green leaves that transform to an almost sci-fi blend of pink and orange come autumn, preferring semi-shade under the protective wing of trees.

Manoj Malde, garden designer, favours Actaea 'Queen of Sheba' for its bottlebrush flower spikes that rise above dusky purple foliage, providing an interesting silhouette through winter. Some plants, like Actaea 'Queen of Sheba', continue to put on a show even when many other plants in the garden are past their best.

Kevin Smith, editor, recommends Liriope muscari for its purple flower spikes that appear as summer begins to fade, and its ability to cope well with shade and dry ground in a garden setting, particularly when mixed with brunnera and astrantias at the front of a border.

Jason Williams, creator of the Cloud Gardener blog, recommends growing violas for their long-lasting flowers, ease of growth, and edibility, making them ideal for pots in small spaces.

For those seeking plants for late-summer color, consider Saxifraga fortunei 'Black Ruby'. This plant thrives in partial shade and produces deep pink blooms with a unique starry appearance.

For dry shade areas, Toby Buckland, Gardeners' World presenter, recommends the evergreen pheasant's tail grass (Anemanthele lessoniana). This plant turns a lovely smoky bronze in cool weather and self-sows.

James Alexander-Sinclair, Gardeners' World Magazine columnist, recommends Mukdenia rossii 'Karasuba' for ground cover. This slow-growing plant has red-flushing leaves in autumn and white flowers in springtime.

Lastly, Catherine Mansley, digital editor, recommends Callicarpa for its bright, gleaming purple berries that last after autumn leaves fall and are suitable for the back of a slightly shady border.

Lastly, Lily Middleton, content creator, recommends Iris foetidissima. This plant thrives in shade, has understated flowers but startlingly bright orange seeds in autumn, and should be avoided for crushing its leaves due to its strong smell.

With these recommendations, you're well on your way to creating a beautiful September garden that will continue to impress as the seasons change. Happy gardening!
