Averted disaster in anti-Semitic assault on a French synagogue

In a chilling incident, a synagogue in La Grande-Motte, near Montpellier, was targeted in an antisemitic attack on 24 June. The young man arrested for attempting to set the Jewish religious building, Beth Yaacov synagogue, ablaze was a 33-year-old Algerian man who declared his actions were in support of Palestine, aiming to provoke a reaction from Israeli officials.

The attack occurred at 8:30am, with CCTV images showing the suspect carrying a Palestinian flag around the time of the incident. The suspect set fire to two of the entry doors of the synagogue and also set fire to two cars in the adjoining parking area. Fortunately, the quick response of the police helped "avoid an absolute tragedy", as stated by the Prime Minister of France, Gabriel Attal.

One of the cars had a gas canister that exploded and injured a policeman. Yonathan Arfi of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF) stated that the use of a gas canister in a car near a synagogue indicates a desire to kill, not just an arson or an attack on a building.

President Emmanul Macron condemned the attack as a "terrorist act" and emphasized the need to protect worship places in the country. France has seen a rise in antisemitic attacks since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war. In response, the Interior Ministry of France activated a plan to immediately reinforce the security of Jewish places of worship.

Over the past decade, France has developed a plan to protect synagogues and Christian churches due to the constant Islamist threat. Prime Minister Attal reiterated that attacking a Jewish citizen is an attack on all French citizens.

This attack on the Beth Yaacov synagogue is not a new occurrence in France. The article is categorized under cities in Evangelical Focus and was published in Evangelical Focus.
