Avoid utilizing ramps when navigating on public thoroughfares
In the city of Aschaffenburg, a crackdown on unauthorized curb ramps has been initiated. These ramps, made of rubber granulate, have been increasingly spotted at curbsides, posing a significant safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists.
The public space (öffentlicher Raum) within the city, where these ramps have been installed, will see their removal due to violations of public regulations. If any ramps or wedges are still found, the city will remove them, along with appropriate fees.
These ramps can cause pedestrians or cyclists to stumble, and they may also cause damage to other vehicles. The ban on these ramps is based on § 32 of the Road Traffic Regulations, and it is prohibited to lay out or permanently install them in public areas, as it is considered damage to the street or curb.
The ramps also pose problems for street cleaning and winter services. They can be thrown onto the road by machines during cleaning, hindering water drainage, and potentially leading to aquaplaning in heavy rain.
If such ramps cause injury to persons or significant property damage, it could result in criminal consequences under § 315b StGB (dangerous interference with road traffic).
However, citizens can apply to have the curbs in front of their property rounded or lowered as a permanent solution. The costs for these renovation measures are to be borne by the applicants themselves.
City employees will pay attention to the removal of these ramps during street inspections. For curb adjustment applications, citizens can contact the Public Works Department of the City of Aschaffenburg: Email: bauhof@our website, Tel.: 06021 330 6613.
The city of Aschaffenburg is requesting the immediate removal of these rubber granulate ramps at curbsides to ensure the safety and smooth functioning of its public spaces.
