Baerbock adopts the 'Sex and the City'-esque New York greeting style in her latest remarks.
In a stylish and unexpected move, Annalena Baerbock, the former Federal Foreign Minister of Germany, has taken to the streets of New York to announce her new position as President of the UN General Assembly. The video, shared on her Instagram profile and titled "Are you ready?", sees Baerbock waving down a yellow taxi, getting in, and writing something in a notebook with the official motto of the 80th UN General Assembly.
The taxi ride, set against the backdrop of the main building of the United Nations in Manhattan, is accompanied by the iconic New York anthem "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z. The video's inspiration comes from a character from the TV show "Sex and the City" who was known for hailing taxis in high heels.
Baerbock's announcement style pays homage to the TV show, reminiscent of its popular narrative. The video sees her adopting a confident and charismatic demeanour, much like the characters from the show.
The video's release comes as Baerbock prepares to officially take up her new position on Tuesday, July 19. It is important to note that the position of President of the UN General Assembly is primarily of protocol significance and should not be confused with the role of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
As of the time of writing, the name of the person who will officially succeed Baerbock in her role in July has not been made public. Baerbock herself has already given up her Bundestag mandate on July 1, 2022, signalling her full commitment to her new role.
This new chapter in Baerbock's career marks an exciting time for the UN General Assembly and the international community as a whole. As we move forward, we eagerly await the impact and influence Baerbock will bring to this important role.
