Bank's ATMs dispense minimal cash, leaving customers stranded with no further assistance.
Volksbank Rottweil, a German banking institution with 13 branches in total, has implemented a measure to reduce the cash balances in its ATMs as a response to an explosion attack on one of their machines. The decision was made around mid-2025, following an incident in May 2023 that involved two ATMs and resulted in a six-figure sum being stolen.
The reduced cash balances in the ATMs have continued for the time being, and no complaints have been received from customers regarding this change. Katrin Bönsel, the head of corporate communications at Volksbank Rottweil, has stated that there have been no complaints about the issue.
The decreasing number of cash withdrawals at ATMs might be a factor in the lack of complaints. According to a study, card payments have become the most popular payment method, and the popularity of cash as a payment method has fallen from around 50% to 35%.
Customers are advised to withdraw the smallest amounts possible or try other nearby ATMs. In some cases, Volksbank Rottweil ATMs in Denkingen may not dispense the full requested amount due to "criminal activities." The bank has filled the ATMs with the smallest amounts available to decrease the risks and damages from such criminal acts.
The bank branches in Denkingen, Frittlingen, and Wellendingen, in addition to the main branches in Rottweil and Sulz, are operated by Volksbank Rottweil. The bank displayed signs indicating "lowest cash levels" following the incident, causing some confusion among customers.
Despite the changes, Volksbank Rottweil continues to operate 13 branches in total. The bank remains committed to providing its customers with the best possible service and ensuring the security of their transactions.
