Barcelona, the popular tourist destination known for its many beaches, witnessed a 27-day long lifeguards' strike that came to an end on August 28, 2020. The strike was initiated by the lifeguards, represented by the union UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores), due to their dissatisfaction with their working conditions and job stability.

The lifeguards' primary concern was their seasonal job being unsustainable given the high cost of living in Catalonia's capital. They sought a more beneficial labor agreement, one that would provide them with more job stability and better working conditions.

The Barcelona City Council, recognising the importance of the lifeguard service in ensuring public safety, engaged in negotiations with the lifeguards' union. After extensive discussions, an agreement was reached that aimed to address the lifeguards' demands.

Key aspects of the agreement include an increase of 26 additional working days for lifeguards during peak season, from the third weekend of May and all throughout peak season weekends. This will ensure constant monitoring of the waters, especially during the influx of visitors and residents.

Moreover, the agreement also includes more staff during the low season, ensuring a consistent level of service throughout the year. The lifeguard cabins must now be fully staffed during these periods, providing a sense of security for beachgoers.

The additional measures outlined in the agreement are estimated to cost the city approximately €300,000 more. However, the city council views this as a necessary investment for the safety and well-being of its citizens and visitors.

The resolution of the conflict was welcomed by the Barcelona City Council, and the lifeguards' strike ended peacefully. This agreement marks a significant step towards improving the working conditions of Barcelona's lifeguards, contributing to a safer and more enjoyable beach experience for all.
