Barricade Situation at Eselswiese Bridge on the Lahn River: Truck Obstruction
The "Eselswiese" bridge along the B 429 between Lahnfeld intersection and Heuchelheim junction is set to undergo a significant construction phase, with work expected to commence before Christmas 2024. This news comes as part of a larger road resurfacing project on the B 429, scheduled for completion by late summer 2025.
The reinforcement work, carried out by the Straßen NRW (State Road Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia), aims to improve the bridge's capacity and safety. The initial works will only take place "from below," with no changes to the current traffic situation on the B 429.
The upcoming construction phase involves several key changes. Two lanes per direction on the "Eselswiese" bridge will be open to traffic, with an overtaking ban for trucks. To lighten the bridge, the bridge caps will be replaced with lightweight concrete. Additionally, a bulge reinforcement will be implemented to counteract the bulging of the steel main girders.
The bulge reinforcement is crucial as it addresses the outward bulging of the steel main bearers. This reinforcement will ensure the bridge's structural integrity and support vehicles up to 44 tons in weight upon successful completion of the measures.
The renewal of the bridge caps in the direction of Lahnfeld intersection will follow after the work in the direction of Wetternberg. Each phase is expected to take approximately three months.
During the construction phase, the cycle and pedestrian path on the bridge will be closed from Monday, June 23rd. Heavy traffic on the B 429 will continue to run normally on one lane per direction during the works. A detour via the surrounding paths and the state road 3359 (Lahnparkstraße) will be signposted in both directions during the closure.
Upon successful completion of the reinforcement, the "Eselswiese" bridge will be usable again for vehicles weighing up to 44 tons. The weight restriction of 3.5 tons on the bridge will be lifted in the medium term.
Following the completion of the bridge work, there will be another construction phase on the "Eselswiese" bridge. The exact details of this phase are yet to be announced, but it is expected to conclude around the end of spring 2026.
