Basement Fire Ignites in Skyscraper in Cologne

On June 4, 2025, a fire broke out in the basement of a high-rise building in Cologne-Porz. The fire alarm was triggered at 15:26, with a caller reporting smoke coming from the basement.

The Cologne Fire Department swiftly responded to the incident, dispatching two fire engines from the professional fire brigade and one fire group from the volunteer fire brigade. A total of 75 personnel and 21 vehicles were involved in the operation.

The fire was located in a large, winding basement room approximately 30 square meters in size. Due to the ventilation situation and the winding basement, extinguishing and locating the fire was challenging. However, the firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the fire and control adjacent areas.

Fortunately, no other persons were injured in the fire. Upon arrival, a male person who was guiding the first firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The adjacent units of the building were also checked for smoke gases.

After about 40 minutes, the fire was finally brought under control. All residents were able to return to their apartments. The scene was then handed over to the police for investigation of the cause of the fire.
