Basketball player Dennis Schroeder experiences racist taunts during Germany's victory against Lithuania in EuroBasket; spectators are removed and prohibited from future events
In a gripping basketball game on Saturday, Germany defeated Lithuania 107-88 in Tampere, Finland, during the group stage of EuroBasket 2025. The star of the match was Dennis Schröder, who led all scorers with an impressive 26 points.
Schröder, who plays for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA, also contributed with six assists and three rebounds to secure Germany's victory. However, the game was marred by incidents of racial abuse directed towards Schröder from some fans in the crowd.
Two fans were ejected from the game, and another was identified on video by FIBA and banned from all future 2025 EuroBasket games due to their racial abuse towards Schröder. FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, released a statement condemning the abusive behaviour.
Schröder, who is the sole owner of his hometown team, Basketball Löwen Braunschweig, since 2018, expressed his displeasure at the fans' actions, stating, "Making monkey noises, that's something I don't respect." He further emphasised that racism has no place in sports and that such behaviour is not acceptable.
Local law enforcement authorities are continuing to investigate the matter, and FIBA provided the relevant footage and information for the investigation. The German national basketball team, with Schröder's strong performance, currently has a 3-0 record in the group stage.
The German squad has two more games in the group stage against Finland and Great Britain before the knockout rounds begin. The games will be aired by RTL, which will show all German national team games, selected knockout matches, and the final live free-to-air, and MagentaTV/MagentaSport, which will broadcast all 76 games live including all tournament matches for subscribers.
Schröder, who has played for 10 different NBA teams since making his league debut in 2013, has been the majority shareholder of Basketball Löwen Braunschweig since 2018. Despite the racial abuse incident, Schröder's determination and skill on the court continue to shine, making him a valuable asset to both the German national team and his hometown team.
