In an unexpected turn of events, 25-year-old billiards player Paolo Gallito stunned the scene by defeating the seasoned Lee Vann Corteza in the final of the Efren "Bata" Reyes Yalin 10-Ball Championship on August 30, 2020.

The championship, organised by international billiards and snooker champion Kap. Marlon Manalo, was a GAB-sanctioned event. Corteza, who had won the 9-ball title in the 40th Turning Stone Classic held in Verona, New York last January, was the clear favourite going into the final.

However, Gallito, relatively unknown in the billiards scene, managed to pull off a hill-hill victory against Corteza. His triumph was a significant upset, given his relative inexperience compared to Corteza.

Corteza had previously outlasted Oliver Villafuerte (11-8) to secure a shot at the crown. He also defeated Lauro Bongay (9-2), Carlo Biado (9-3), and James Aranas (9-5) during the championship. Aranas, it turns out, was the same player who unexpectedly won the 1-million-peso prize against Corteza in the final.

Gallito, expressing disbelief at his triumph, stated that it was unexpected. He won the top purse of P1 million for his victory. Corteza received a prize of P300,000 for his second place finish.

The final match of the championship was reported by Marlon Bernardino. Corteza, in his post-match interview, considered the event as a memorable one and found the final match to be tough.

This unexpected victory by Gallito is sure to create a ripple effect in the billiards world, as he continues to make a name for himself in the scene.
