Battle of Skies: determining the superior airline between United and Southwest
In the competitive world of air travel, two airlines stand out: Southwest and United Airlines. While both offer unique services, they cater to different needs of passengers.
Southwest Airlines, known for its no-frills approach, does not provide seat-back entertainment. However, in-flight movies and TV shows are available on personal devices. One of the airline's focus cities includes unexpected destinations like Phoenix, Tucson, San Diego, and Portland, among others. Southwest flies to over 117 destinations, primarily in the U.S., with some international destinations in the Caribbean and Central America.
On the other hand, United Airlines offers a more traditional airline experience. United covers more than 300 destinations across six continents, making it part of the world's largest airline alliance, Star Alliance. United Airlines charges for carry-on luggage on basic economy tickets, unlike Southwest, which does not charge for carry-ons.
United Airlines offers a range of classes on long-haul international flights, including Premium Plus and United Polaris. Premium Plus is akin to first class with large recliner chairs, while United Polaris provides lie-flat pods for guests. Southwest, however, does not offer substantial catering on long-haul flights.
When it comes to loyalty programs, both airlines have their perks. Southwest Rapid Rewards has two elite status tiers: A-List and A-List Preferred. Benefits include a free checked bag, same-day standby, seat selection at booking, and free in-flight Wi-Fi for A-List Preferred members. United's MileagePlus loyalty program allows members to redeem miles for flights on United and its partners, offering a wide range of travel destinations. United members can earn elite status through a combination of Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) and Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs).
Southwest offers its highest earners a Companion Pass, allowing a companion to travel with for the price of taxes and fees. United's elite status offers more perks than Southwest's, including airport lounge access and complimentary first class upgrades. United Airlines also offers free in-flight messaging to all guests.
Regarding fees, United charges extra fees for checked baggage, the amount varying by itinerary and whether it's paid in advance. United Airlines charges for seat selection on some tickets, but those with elite status can enjoy this perk for free. Southwest does not charge for carry-on bags or seat selection.
In terms of Wi-Fi, United Wi-Fi is available on the airline, with the cost varying based on where you're flying. Southwest Rapid Rewards program lets members earn points that are most valuable when redeemed for Southwest flights.
Both Southwest and United Airlines have their strengths, and the choice between the two often comes down to personal preferences and travel needs. Whether you prefer a no-frills, budget-friendly experience or a traditional airline with more amenities, both airlines offer options to suit various travellers.
