In the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, the city of Dessau-Roßlau is gearing up for a historic event. The 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, the influential art school founded by architect Walter Gropius in 1919, is about to commence. Organised by the German Press Agency and the city itself, this celebration promises to be a grand affair, running from September 4.

The Bauhaus school, initially active in Weimar and Berlin, found its permanent home in Dessau in 1925. The city's Bauhaus building, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a testament to the school's ethos, made of glass, concrete, and metal. This iconic structure was officially granted the status of a college for design in 1926.

Barbara Steiner, the Director of Bauhaus, expresses her excitement about the upcoming event. "We have prepared for this moment for years," she says, adding that the opening of the anniversary celebration will be loud, quiet, emotional, and hopefully touching.

The festivities will span over two months, marking the double anniversary from the arrival of the Bauhauslers in Dessau in 1925 to the opening of the Bauhaus building on December 4, 1926. The celebrations will include exhibitions, artistic programs, conferences, and parties, aiming to showcase the school's impact on design, art, and architecture.

The Bauhauslers, the members of Bauhaus, were known for their innovative designs of furniture, lighting, jewelry, and household items. Their influence radiated from Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin to the whole world. Today, anyone walking through the city center of Dessau can hardly miss the influence of Bauhaus.

However, Steiner acknowledges that not everyone may appreciate what they see and experience during the celebration. She emphasises the importance of tolerating different opinions to preserve the Bauhaus heritage.

The city of Dessau is also celebrating the Bauhaus anniversary with a special Bauhaus beer. Several previously closed buildings in Dessau will be made accessible for the anniversary, providing a glimpse into the city's rich history.

In addition, the Bauhauslers plan to address resource waste and environmental destruction during the anniversary. The city of Dessau, proud of the international fame Bauhaus achieved from Dessau, is looking forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to celebrate this significant milestone.
