Bayreuth showcases its nature preservation endeavors on its territory
In the heart of Bayreuth, an unexpected transformation is taking place. Bayreuth Utilities, a local energy and water supplier, is not just focused on providing essential services, but also on preserving and enhancing the city's natural beauty.
Under the leadership of CEO, Markus Rützel, Bayreuth Utilities has embarked on a mission to promote biodiversity and protect drinking water sources. One of their key initiatives is the maintenance and expansion of traditional orchards, such as the one in Laineck, which serves as a food source for bees and birds.
This year, Bayreuth Utilities plans to plant 36 more high-stem fruit trees in the orchard. The exact coordinates of this traditional orchard are approximately 49.9422° N latitude and 11.5741° E longitude.
But Bayreuth Utilities' efforts extend beyond fruit trees. They have established several wildflower meadows covering around 30,000 square meters, such as around the waterworks on the Eichelberg. Previously, these meadows were regularly mowed, but now they are allowed to grow freely to promote biodiversity.
Helena Skrobranek, responsible for operational sustainability projects at Bayreuth Utilities, emphasizes the importance of these initiatives. "Working with children in our nature conservation efforts is crucial," she says. This sentiment is reflected in the hedge that was planted by Bayreuth Utilities and primary school children in Laineck.
In addition, an "insect paradise" has been created by Bayreuth Utilities not far from the Pudermühle. This sanctuary features a pond, stone pile, deadwood piles, and an artificially created slope. A large insect hotel, built by Bayreuth Utilities with children from a primary school, is another testament to their commitment to fostering a thriving ecosystem.
Guided tours on the Eichelberg are provided by Bayreuth Utilities to explain their wildflower meadows and inspire others to take action. Markus Rützel emphasizes the tangible impact of these projects for people in and around Bayreuth. "Our projects are not just about preserving nature," he says, "they are about creating a better quality of life for everyone."
Bayreuth Utilities manages over 100 hectares of land, including administrative buildings, waterworks, switchgear houses, and water protection areas. These areas, particularly those in water protection zones, are particularly valuable for nature conservation.
As Bayreuth Utilities continues to expand and diversify their nature conservation efforts, they are setting a powerful example for other utilities and communities. Their dedication to preserving and enhancing the city's natural beauty is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and the well-being of Bayreuth's residents.
