Bayrou Administration Faces Resignation Following 364-194 Vote Against Confidence
In a historic turn of events, the French National Assembly has rejected a motion of no confidence against the government of Prime Minister François Bayrou. The vote count was 364 against and 194 in favour, with 573 deputies present during the session. This marks the first time a government has fallen due to the defeat of a motion of confidence during the Fifth Republic.
The result of the vote forces Bayrou to present his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday. Prime Minister Bayrou is expected to comply with the decision, bringing an end to his tenure.
The motion of no confidence was a significant test for Bayrou's government, which has been under pressure due to various issues. Despite the rejection, the government, as of the current context, is resisting breaking relations with Israel, despite pressure from certain parties.
The French National Assembly session was closed by its president, Yaël Braun-Pivet, with a declaration that the prime minister must present the resignation of the government to the president of the Republic. Braun-Pivet, who presided over the session, also revealed that 15 deputies abstained from voting.
Meanwhile, outside the political arena, there have been significant developments. Pope Leo XIV has canonized Carlo Acutis, marking him as the first millennial saint. Acutis, an Italian teenager who died in 2006, was known for his work in promoting Eucharistic devotion.
In another development, the French Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to France for a meeting to address espionage allegations. The exact nature of the allegations and the outcome of the meeting remain unclear at this time.
On a different note, the final match at the US Open between Alcaraz and Sinner has been delayed by half an hour due to security measures. The match, scheduled to start at 9 PM local time, is now expected to begin at 9:30 PM.
As the political landscape in France continues to evolve, the resignation of Prime Minister Bayrou is set to trigger a new round of political manoeuvring. Stay tuned for more updates.
