Beach Vacations Preference Shift: Vietnam Emerges as Popular Choice Over Thailand
In a recent online poll conducted between July 30 and August 12, respondents shared their preferences for holiday destinations in Southeast Asia. The results suggest a significant shift in favour of Vietnam, with more than a quarter of online respondents (26.3%) choosing it as their preferred choice for a tropical beach holiday.
Cambodia and Malaysia also received notable mentions, with 12.7% of respondents each selecting them for their beach getaways. Interestingly, a similar percentage (12.7%) opted for Malaysia, indicating a potential split in preferences among those seeking tropical beach holidays.
Thailand, traditionally a popular choice, saw a decline in favour, with Vietnam surpassing it in popularity. Over 59% of respondents stated that problems with roads, public transport, and essential services lessen Thailand's attractiveness, while 56% expressed concerns about reports of tourists being scammed or treated unfairly, which reduce their interest in visiting.
However, the poll results highlight broader concerns about Thailand's tourism outlook. More than half of participants stated that Thailand's decriminalisation of cannabis has had little effect on tourists' interest in visiting. This suggests that other factors, such as safety and law enforcement, may be more critical for tourists. Indeed, safety and law enforcement were highlighted as the top priority (39.6%) for Thailand to focus on.
Despite these concerns, respondents view the kingdom as a destination rich in culture, cuisine, and warm hospitality (46.3%). Cities like Chiang Mai and Pai, known for their cultural and nature experiences, and Hua Hin and Koh Chang, growing as less crowded beach destinations, are gaining popularity. While their popularity is increasing, they still generally trail behind Thailand's major beach hubs like Phuket and Krabi for beach holidays.
The Philippines was the second choice with 18.9% of the votes, and Singapore received 11.1% of the votes for a tropical beach holiday. Arts and culture (12.4%) and historical landmarks (17.8%) were also rated as appealing aspects by respondents. Natural scenery was valued by 15.9% of respondents.
In conclusion, the poll results indicate a shift in preference for a tropical beach holiday from other Southeast Asian nations to Vietnam. Thailand, while still highly regarded for its cultural and gastronomic offerings, faces challenges in addressing concerns about infrastructure and safety to maintain its competitiveness in the region.
