Bicycle advocacy group proposes replacing parking spaces with bike racks at Arsenalplatz Square

Redesign leaves limited parking spots solely for disabled and e-scooters at Ludwigsburg's Arsenal Square, prompting criticism from local ADFC, asserting it's still excessive.

In the heart of Ludwigsburg, the redesign of Arsenal Square, which took place in June, has sparked a debate among residents and local organisations. The revamped square now boasts a café, trees, and seating banks, replacing some of the previous parking spaces.

The ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club) Ludwigsburg has been vocal about the changes, expressing concerns over the misuse of disabled parking spaces on Wilhelmstraße. They claim that these spaces are being used by normal city visitors, and have called for their removal, replacing them with bike racks.

The city of Ludwigsburg, however, has taken steps to address this issue. According to their confirmation, there are now six bike racks on Wilhelmstraße, an increase of two since the redesign, and 15 more racks have been added at Arsenal Square. The department of safety and order has also been present in Wilhelmstraße to prevent misuse of the disabled parking spaces.

The redesign plan for Arsenal Square, passed in December 2022, provided for up to 24 special parking spaces, including disabled parking spaces, parking spaces with electric charging stations, car-sharing spaces, and five taxi parking spaces on Arsenalstraße. Four disabled parking spaces are available in the southeastern corner of the Arsenalplatz, directly at the state archive, and there are enough disabled parking spaces in the immediate vicinity, such as on Myliusstraße.

Despite the ADFC's push, it seems that the situation at Arsenal Square will not change anytime soon. Some people in Ludwigsburg still wish for the parking spaces on the Arsenalplatz to return, while others, like regular driver Emanuel Hege, believe that more parking space should be taken away.

The city of Ludwigsburg is bound by the council's decision regarding the special parking spaces at the Arsenalplatz. Parking spaces for cars reappeared on Wilhelmstraße in August, but only for disabled people. In the parking zone for e-scooters, cars are parking again, according to the ADFC.

The organisation demanding the removal of disabled parking spaces on Wilhelmstraße in Ludwigsburg is not specified in the search results. However, 40 new bicycle parking spaces are planned as part of the renovation of Arsenalplatz.

Meanwhile, the Ludwigsburg Arsenal Square is undergoing further changes, with a new park being created at the heart of the city. The ongoing renovations aim to provide a more welcoming and sustainable environment for all residents and visitors. The city administration intends to evaluate the situation at Arsenal Square and discuss the results with the council, and make adjustments as necessary.
