Bielefeld promotes Düsseldorf to the second tier, crushing them with a 5-1 victory.
Fortuna Düsseldorf began their 2022/2023 2. Bundesliga season with a disappointing loss to Arminia Bielefeld. The final scoreline read 5-1 in favour of the hosts, marking a tough start for the Düsseldorf side.
The first half of the match saw both teams creating opportunities, with Fortuna Düsseldorf's Daniel Thioune's men threatening early on. In the 18th minute, Zimmermann had a great chance to equalize, but was denied spectacularly by Bielefeld's Russo on the line. Rasmussen nearly scored with a powerful shot off the underside of the bar in the 33rd minute, keeping the score level at that point.
However, Bielefeld took the lead just before half-time, as Corboz broke through on the left and passed to Sarenren-Bazee for the opening goal. To make matters worse for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Oberdorf received a second yellow card for a tactical foul in the 44th minute and was sent off, leaving the team to play the second half a player down.
The second half saw Bielefeld dominating the game, with Felix scoring from a Handwerker corner in the 75th minute to extend their lead. Grodowski then scored from another corner three minutes later, making it 4-1. Kania converted a penalty in the 54th minute after Alexandropoulos committed a handball in Düsseldorf's penalty area.
Fortuna Düsseldorf tried to fight back, with Rossmann having a chance to reduce the deficit in the 86th minute, but was denied by Kersken. Rasmussen provided the assist for Itten's goal in the 35th minute, but it was too little too late for the struggling team. Schreck scored the final goal for Bielefeld in the 7th minute of injury time, securing a comprehensive victory for the home side.
As a result of this defeat, Fortuna Düsseldorf finds itself at the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga table after the first matchday. On the other hand, with the win, Arminia Bielefeld temporarily takes the lead in the table. The Düsseldorf team will be hoping to bounce back in their next match and improve their position in the league.
