Biking from Land's End to John o'Groats as a tribute to a cherished companion
Inspiring people across the UK with his cycling journeys, Tim McKenna left an indelible mark on many hearts. His legacy lives on, as his friend Anna Hughes embarked on a 1,000-mile cycling trip from Land's End to John o'Groats, a journey that paid tribute to Tim's memory and his unwavering commitment to mental health awareness.
Eight years ago, Tim first reached out to Anna Hughes after reading her book about cycling around the UK coast. Their shared love of cycling soon blossomed into a beautiful friendship. Tim, who struggled with bipolar disorder, found solace and a means to manage his mental health through cycling. He openly wrote about his struggles on his online blog, describing cycling as an escape from his problems.
Anna, inspired by Tim's resilience and passion, founded the organisation "ThriveTogether" to raise funds for a website focused on Tim McKenna's key theme, mental health. In honour of Tim, she aimed to maintain the relaxed, self-supported style of his cycling adventures, taking all necessary equipment and stopping as needed. The National Cycle Network served as a guide for almost the entire journey.
The self-supported cycling trip, lasting for 20 days, saw the group covering approximately 50 miles a day while pedaling along sections of the National Cycle Network. They followed routes including Network Routes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, which offered a mix of quiet routes both on and off the roads.
Friends joined Anna on this emotional journey, carrying Tim's spirit with them every pedal stroke. The trip concluded with Route 1 at the northern tip of the UK mainland. Tim, who had not flown for several years, would have been proud to know that his journey inspired others to embrace wonderful experiences without flying.
If you need help with mental health issues, the Samaritans' 24/7 helpline is available on 116 123. To donate to causes close to Tim's heart, visit Anna's fundraising page. Tim's story serves as a reminder that everyone has the power to make a difference, no matter how small. His legacy continues to inspire and bring hope to those struggling with mental health issues.
