BJP Contemplates Imposition of President's Rule in Manipur
Manipur is in a state of political uncertainty as the Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, has resigned from his position. The central BJP leadership is now weighing the possibility of imposing President's Rule in the state for a period of four to five months.
N. Biren Singh is likely to continue as caretaker until the Centre makes a decision on suspended animation, as stated by the BJP leader in Manipur. The outgoing Chief Minister has suggested this move to allow MLAs to reach a consensus on his replacement.
The search for a new Chief Minister of Manipur is proving challenging for the BJP's central leadership, who are struggling to find a consensus candidate. Speculation abounds that potential candidates could be Manipur Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh and urban development minister Yumnam Khemchand.
However, some legislators are advocating for wider consultation before choosing a replacement for N. Biren Singh. One legislator has expressed concern that the imposition of President's Rule could be opposed by some legislators due to potential negative implications for their allies NPF and NPP.
The Kuki-Zo groups are pressing for President's Rule in the state, with the Kuki Zo Council chairperson referring to the possibility of another BJP leader from the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley taking up the reins as "old wine in a new bottle". The Kukis have been demanding a separate administration, citing the impossibility of their co-existence with the Meiteis.
The Union home ministry is assessing the prevailing situation in Manipur, with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla asking N. Biren Singh to continue in office until "alternative arrangements" are made. The imposition of President's Rule could be extended until a consensus candidate for the Chief Minister is found.
It is important to note that Manipur has a history of President's Rule, having been imposed in the state 10 times so far. The imposition of President's Rule may have significant implications for the political landscape of the state.
As the situation in Manipur unfolds, it is clear that the BJP central leadership needs more time to create a consensus among the legislators for the new Manipur Chief Minister. The people of Manipur await the outcome of these political developments with bated breath.
