Eric Heisserer, a renowned screenwriter and author, has made a significant impact in the world of entertainment. Originally from Oklahoma, where his father taught ancient history at Oklahoma University, Heisserer's life has been a journey of creativity and intellectual pursuit.
Heisserer began his writing career in the mid-1990s in the tabletop game market, but it was his online epistolary story, "The Dionaea House," that marked his breakthrough as a screenwriter. Since then, he has established himself as a versatile and accomplished writer, known for his work on the hit horror film Lights Out, based on the short film by David Sandberg, and the Oscar-nominated film Arrival.
In the realm of comics, Heisserer has made a name for himself with his unique storytelling. He wrote the original title "Secret Weapons" for Valiant Comics, and the graphic novel "Lone Wolf 2100: Chase the Setting Sun" for Dark Horse Comics. One of his most notable creations is Bloodshot, a character from Valiant Comics who stands out among superheroes due to his complexity and internal conflict.
Bloodshot is a superhero whose mind has been controlled, and his actions are motivated by love he can't forget. Unlike many superheroes, Bloodshot's powers come from technology, making him grounded in the real world. This unique character resonates with military personnel due to his core values, and has become one of the most popular characters in Valiant Comics' lineup, with over 81 million comics sold.
The film adaptation of Bloodshot, directed by David S. F. Wilson, explores the intersection of technology with our daily lives, including the potential for buying strength and intelligence. Wilson, who was born and raised in Cape Town, was excited and terrified about directing Bloodshot, as it pushed him out of his comfort zone. Vin Diesel took on the role of Bloodshot, his first on-screen superhero role.
Heisserer is not only a creator, but also a nurturer of talent. He founded and leads The Adrenaline Film Project, a program in his hometown to help filmmakers of all ages. Through The Adrenaline Film Project, Heisserer has produced over two hundred short films and mentored over six hundred aspiring filmmakers.
Most recently, Heisserer created and showran the first season of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone," based on the bestselling fantasy novels of Leigh Bardugo. He also directed the pilot episode of the Netflix series "Love, Death + Robots," titled "Sonnie's Edge."
With a first-look deal with Paramount under his Chronology production banner, Heisserer continues to make waves in the entertainment industry, combining his passion for storytelling with his commitment to fostering new talent.
