BMW intends to develop a premium off-road SUV, with an electric powertrain potential.
BMW is set to expand its lineup with the announcement of a new off-road model, aiming to rival vehicles like the Mercedes G-Class or Land Rover Defender. The luxurious all-wheel-drive vehicle, expected to be produced in the USA from 2029, will be based on the Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform.
The new off-road model is designed to accommodate up to seven people in three rows, offering greater comfort for both passengers and drivers. It will also boast a higher ground clearance and a higher approach angle compared to any current BMW, ensuring superior off-road capabilities.
In terms of power, BMW is considering a combination of a pure combustion engine and electric solutions. The use of compact electric hub motors, developed together with DeepDrive, is being tested for the BMW off-roader. Another possible option is an electric variant with a compact combustion engine on board as a power generator for the drive battery.
The model will also feature longer suspension travel compared to any current BMW, providing an exceptional off-road experience. To enable economies of scale with other large SUV models and facilitate extensive chassis changes for off-road use, this modification is intended.
The luxurious interior of the new model is expected to have higher material quality and equipment than current top SUV models. Development work on the model is in full swing, as confirmed by an unnamed senior BMW manager.
The new series will be sold in all markets served by BMW. BMW is also not ruling out an electric version of the BMW off-roader, ensuring that the model remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the automotive industry.
This modification is intended to enable economies of scale with other large SUV models and facilitate extensive chassis changes for off-road use. The new off-road model will combine elements of the upcoming electric cars of the "New Class" with traditionally robust design features, promising a unique blend of modern technology and classic BMW styling.
