Bohemian FC expresses gratitude towards Greta Thunberg for donning the Fontaines DC jersey during her Gaza relief trip
In a remarkable show of support, Irish football club Bohemians FC and the acclaimed band Fontaines DC have joined forces to rally funds and solidarity for the besieged Palestinian territory, Gaza.
The Bohemians FC, in a bold move, released a limited edition jersey that beautifully blends Irish and Palestinian motifs. This unique jersey, designed in collaboration with Fontaines DC, has raised over €200,000 for Medical Aid for Palestinians.
The Bohemians jersey, adorned with a Palestinian flag and the phrase Saoirse don Phalaistín (Free Palestine) on the embroidered hem tag, has been worn by none other than environmental activist Greta Thunberg during a humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza.
The humanitarian aid flotilla, attempting to circumvent the Israeli blockade, faced delays due to bad weather. Unfortunately, before it could deliver its much-needed aid, the flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces.
The Israeli embassy in Dublin closed its doors in December 2023, alleging that Ireland pursued "extreme anti-Israeli policies". This move came amidst growing international criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, with the world's leading genocide scholars' association issuing a resolution stating that Israel's actions meet the legal definition of genocide.
The Bohemians jersey is not the only initiative by Irish football clubs. St. Patrick's Athletic released a limited edition of T-shirts with Fontaines D.C. to raise funds for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, and they made a donation for this cause.
Fontaines DC, known for their activism, have drawn controversy by using chants and banners to denounce Israel during concerts. This is not unlike the rap trio Kneecap, who have faced similar criticism for their stance. However, these actions have not deterred the band from continuing their advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
The situation in Gaza is dire, with nearly 65,000 people having died and famine spreading rapidly. UN Secretary General António Guterres has described the Gaza famine as a "man-made disaster".
In response to the term "Paddystine" coined by pro-Israelis to disparage Ireland, Irish activists have embraced the term Paddystinian as a badge of honor, standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Fontaines DC and Bohemians FC's collaboration did not stop with the first limited edition jersey. This summer, they launched a second one, with profits going to a West Bank sports project.
In these challenging times, the solidarity shown by Bohemians FC and Fontaines DC serves as a beacon of hope for the people of Gaza. Their efforts underscore the power of art and sport in raising awareness and funds for humanitarian causes.
