Bolsonaro's Potential Escape Prompts Tightened Controls before Coup Trial in Brazil

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest in Brasília, the country's capital, following allegations of plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential elections.

This summer, the White House intervened in Bolsonaro's case, as requested by one of his sons in recent efforts to lobby the White House. However, no specific details about the intervention have been disclosed.

Bolsonaro is awaiting trial, which is scheduled to start on Tuesday. He is under house arrest and is wearing an ankle monitor as part of his confinement. The authorities have expressed concerns about Bolsonaro's potential to flee, given his past expressions of considering escape.

The ankle monitors worn by Bolsonaro do not provide real-time movements, which has raised concerns among the authorities. A Brazilian federal police chief revealed that there had been plans for a potential escape attempt by Bolsonaro.

To address this risk, Alexandre de Moraes, a Supreme Court justice, has allowed the police to set up around Bolsonaro's house. Plainclothes police are stationed outside and around the former president's residence.

Justice Moraes stated that the measure is intended to address the risk of escape through adjacent properties. The police official expressed concern that the shortcoming in the ankle monitor could give Bolsonaro time to flee, despite the lack of imminent escape plan intelligence.

The police official stated that there was no intelligence suggesting an immediate escape plan by Bolsonaro, but extra measures were deemed necessary due to Bolsonaro's past indications of considering fleeing. The authorities are especially concerned by recent efforts by one of Bolsonaro's sons to lobby the White House to intervene in his father's case.

It is important to note that this is an ongoing situation, and further developments are expected as the trial approaches. The public will be updated as more information becomes available.
