Tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: A Growing Economic Pillar

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a region in northern Germany, continues to reap the benefits of a thriving tourism industry. The sector is not only a significant contributor to the regional economy but also a major source of employment, with nearly 120,000 people employed in the industry.

The business of tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been growing significantly since the early 1990s. A 2023 study states that the number of guest nights in the region has more than tripled since then, reaching 33 million per year. In the first half of 2023, approximately 3.5 million guest arrivals were recorded, marking a 2.6% increase from the previous year.

However, a survey conducted by the Landestourismusverband (State Tourism Association) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the first half of 20XX revealed a mixed picture. While the growth rates in tourism were higher than the national average in 2023, only 37% of tourism businesses were satisfied with their performance in the first half of 2024. This was a decline from the 45% satisfaction rate recorded in the same period of 2024.

The complaints mainly came from the catering industry, with businesses expressing concerns about the slow recovery from the pandemic's impact. Despite these challenges, the tourism industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern continues to generate significant economic activity, with an annual turnover of approximately seven billion euros.

The tourism industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is highly seasonal and primarily focused on the summer. However, in the main season of 2023, 53% of businesses in the tourism sector were satisfied or very satisfied with their performance, despite fewer guests and lower turnover and profits in the summer.

A survey of around 250 hotels, guesthouses, leisure facilities, and tourism offices in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern confirmed a positive trend in tourism. The number of overnight stays in the region in the first half of 2023 was 13.2 million, a 0.9% increase.

The growth of tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been consistent over the years, with an increase in guest arrivals, overnight stays, and turnover. The industry remains a key economic pillar for the region, contributing significantly to its economic prosperity.
