Boxing competitor Lisa O'Rourke advances to the quarterfinals at the World Boxing Championships being held in Liverpool.
The World Boxing Championships in Liverpool are proving to be a successful event for Irish boxers, with several of them advancing to the later stages of the competition.
In Tuesday's evening session, Dean Clancy from Sligo, Ireland, will fight Georgia's Lasha Guruli in the last-16 round. Clancy, a 23-year-old boxer, won his 65kg challenge against Ihlasbek Kochkarov from Turkmenistan, taking full advantage of a bye from the opening round and earning a unanimous victory. Clancy was faster and smarter throughout the three rounds, hardly troubled by the inexperienced Kochkarov.
Meanwhile, Aoife O'Rourke, a World Champion having won the title in 2022, will box for a medal in Tuesday's evening session against Lekeisha Pergoliti of Australia. O'Rourke's opponent was Shirleidis Orozco Martinez from Colombia, and the Irish boxer took a 5-0 victory, with a point deduction for Martinez and a third-round standing count.
Unfortunately, Zara Breslin, 60kg contender, and Daina Moorehouse, 51kg contender, suffered defeats on Saturday. In the 57kg category, Michaela Walsh lost her last-16 contest against Shih-Yin Wu of Chinese Taipei, with a score of 4-1.
On day four of the championships, Lisa O'Rourke, a 23-year-old boxer from Roscommon, Ireland, won her 70kg bout. Both Joyce and his opponent, Jaeyong Shin of Korea, faced points deductions in the 55kg bout, but all five judges gave their decision to Joyce.
The elder O'Rourke sister, Aoife, will meet Norway's Sunniva Hofstad in the quarter-finals in Wednesday's evening session. It's an exciting time for Irish boxing, with several boxers advancing in the competition and the promise of more medals to come.
